For custom t shirts to work as advertising, you must have a shirt that your customers will actually wear.  The custom t shirt does your forum absolutely no good if it is sitting in someone’s drawer at home!  Choose a design that is trendy and fun, incorporating colors and pictures that match the current styles.  Choose a t shirt made with high quality fabric, so it will be comfortable and durable.  You might want to consider having the shirt embroidered with your information, instead of simply using a heat transferred design.  This ensures it will stand up over many trips through the washing machine.

Now, for the design, make sure that the name of your forum are clearly visible.  Doing this allows the custom t shirt to advertise your forum even if your customer does not talk about you.  Choose a catchy slogan and a fun picture to draw attention to the shirt.  Bright colors draw attention, but try not to have the colors so garish that your customers will not wear the shirt.  Remember, the t shirt does nothing for your forum if it is not worn.
